The Carriage House: A Hidden Gem in Real Estate

The Carriage House: A Hidden Gem in Real Estate

If you hear the term carriage house and automatically think of horses and stables, you’re practically correct! These unique buildings are used to store horses and carriages!

And even though we don’t really have that many horses roaming the streets these days, these buildings were taken and restored or renovated for other purposes!

The original houses were multi-purpose, usually with two stories, with the horses and gear on the bottom level and their riders on the upper level.

These types of homes are especially popular in the Northeast, even today!

So if you’re looking to downsize or you have a carriage house sitting on your property and you don’t know what to do with it, keep reading to find out more!

Modern Uses for a Carriage House

1. Garage with Enough Space

Unlike regular garages, carriage houses have ample space to fit not one, but two or more cars! Keep your car shielded from nature’s shifting moods and add property value to your home!

2. Living Space

If you want to downsize or if you’re just looking for something different, then a converted carriage house is just the right thing for you!

3. Studio or Apartment

Along with enough garage space, you can get extra space in your carriage house that you’ll be able to rent and make additional income!

4. Workshop

If you love arts and crafts or DIY tutorials, or if you’re just someone who needs a workshop for other reasons, a carriage house is the perfect place to store all of your tools!

5. Pool House

If you have a pool, then you need a pool house! Utilize your carriage house and turn it into your own personal oasis!

6. Guest House or In-Law Suite

No matter the size, carriage houses always look great when converted into living spaces! Even from a historical aspect, they always had living quarters with a functioning kitchen and bathroom!

7. Entertainment Space

Turning your carriage house into an entertainment space with enough games and seating is always a good idea in my book!

8. Beach House

Realistically, when we go to the beach we’re going there for the beach. Not the rental place! So having a small carriage-turned-beach-house like this is a dream come true!

9. Safe Haven

Turn your carriage house into a quaint space where you can relax and take your mind off of stressful things!

10. Home Office

If there isn’t enough room in the main house, turn your carriage house into a home office! It’s perfectly quiet without any distractions and you’ll have all that space for yourself!

11. Renovated Carriage House

This historic carriage house was renovated to serve as an actual home. It was used as a carriage house and stable, but later on, it was bought and turned into a house of its own!

12. Game Space

If you’re really into gaming, the carriage House is the perfect space to store all of your gadgets and games!

13. Preserved Carriage House

14. Historical Meaning

Most of these houses have a deep historical meaning behind them and it’s always a shame to see a home with so much charm and history weather away!

15. Garden Shed

Last but not least, if you have a carriage house, chances are you have a pretty big backyard!

And that backyard needs tending, so I would suggest turning that carriage house into a cute little garden shed!
