The ’90s Look: Top 9 Interior Design Trends That Marked The Decade

Being a ’90s kid, I always dreamt of having a big home decorated with the most popular design trends of that decade.

Now when I look back, there were definitely some cool things I would still integrate in my home – and there are some I really do not find remotely appealing anymore.

However, ’90s decor is making a comeback, and there are many designers who still prefer this style to this day – some homes are already doing the ’90s makeover.

Let us remember some of the most memorable interior design staples of this decade. If you lived in the ’90s, you will probably remember some of these.

If you are younger and you are redecorating your home to fit the ’90s style, here are some of the most useful ’90s decor tips for you.

1. Floral Wallpapers

Floral patterns were very popular, especially in the early ’90s – wallpapers were mostly floral in soft color palettes.

From wallpapers to curtains, floral print was a staple that added a natural feel to every space.

2. Blow-Up Furniture

I remember wanting an orange blow-up armchair so badly – and I finally got it when I was 7!

This was another staple that looked futuristic and cool and transformed every space into the ’90s modern home.

3. Open-Concept Spaces

The ’90s were all about big spaces and airy feel – especially the later part of the decade.

Open-concept spaces and open layouts became very popular for apartments, especially connecting living rooms with kitchens and dining rooms.

4. Green And Burgundy Accents

Earthy color palettes, especially deep green and burgundy made the whole place feel homey and cozy.

These colors could be found everywhere – from sofas to carpets and brought some natural feel to the home.

5. Plaid Patterns

Plaid sofas, armchairs, bedding, and curtains were highly popular in ’90s homes.

Plaid in red, green, and blue was a beautiful addition, especially to grunge-inspired homes.

6. Oak Kitchen Cabinets

Light oak was popular for most kitchens as it was warm and inviting.

Oak is a durable material, so most kitchens were elevated by this high-quality option.

7. Beige Leather

Beige leather sofas became more and more popular in the late ’90s.

They made living rooms feel more airy and open and were mostly used in open-concept spaces.

8. Bold Accents

Just like the ’80s, this decade was all about color and fun, and it transferred to interior design.

Purple, pink, and neon accents were very popular in all rooms of the house.

9. Floral Bedrooms

Just like floral wallpapers, bedrooms were decorated with floral bedding, drapes, and carpets.

This was mostly popular in the early ’90s when maximalist style was still dominating the interiors.
