Never Break These 10 Interior Design Rules (Experts’ Advice)

Before decorating my new home, I decided to explore some of the most important rules in interior design that designers hate breaking.

When you are a beginner or someone who has never taken interior design seriously, you may become lost in all the different styles and rules.

So, I wanted to create a list of the most important points all beginners should always consider when decorating their spaces.

Here are the top 10 rules you should never break in interior design if you want your space to look more stylish and elegant.

1. Never Have One Source of Light in a Room

Do not make the mistake of relying on just one overhead light because it can make a room feel flat, uninteresting, and uninviting.

Layer your lighting by adding floor lamps, table lamps, or wall sconces to create depth and a cozy and warm atmosphere.

Trust me, your space will feel so much more inviting and more put-together with a mix of light sources.

2. Never Buy Short Curtains

Short curtains can make a room feel small and almost unfinished like someone forgot to dress the windows properly.

Always go for floor-length curtains, even if your windows aren’t tall because long curtains elongate the space and add a touch of elegance.

Also, try to hang them high and wide to make the room feel larger and more sophisticated.

3. Always Measure Before You Buy

Buying furniture or rugs without measuring first is a rookie mistake we’ve all made at least once.

This mistake can result in wrong purchases and many returns – which is what we do not have time for while decorating.

Grab a measuring tape and write down your room dimensions before heading out to shop.

It’ll save you the pain of realizing your dream sofa doesn’t fit through the door or that table you like is just too small.

4. Always Buy a Quality Rug

A good rug ties the room together, so do not try to save money here. Look for a material that feels good and something that will last through wear and tear.

A cheap rug might save you money, but a durable one is worth it because it will last much longer and will keep your room looking classy.

5. Never Buy Stylish but Unfunctional Pieces

That gorgeous chair might look amazing in your Instagram feed, but if it’s uncomfortable to sit in, it will just collect dust.

That elegant and expensive coffee table might add to the chic vibe you are after, but if it is always in the way and is rarely used, it is not worth it.

Choose furniture that’s both practical and stylishit’s possible, I promise.

Your home should definitely work for you, not just look pretty.

6. If It Is Expensive, Make It Timeless

When you’re spending big money, try to choose classic designs that will not go out of style in a year or two.

Think neutral tones, clean lines, and versatile pieces.

These investments will stand the test of time and will be able to evolve with your decor.

7. Never Put Bulky Furniture in Narrow Spaces

Cramming oversized furniture into a small or narrow space will make it feel claustrophobic and too cluttered.

Go for sleek and lightweight pieces that fit the scale of the room and do not look too bulky – clutter is never classy!

8. Do Not Buy Your Furniture from the Same Collection

Mixing and matching pieces adds personality and charm to your home, and many beginners would not agree with this.

Buying everything from the same collection or choosing everything in the same color and material can make a space feel like a showroom instead of a lived-in home.

Experiment with textures, colors, finishes, and styles to create a more interesting and stylish look.

9. Never Cover a Fireplace

A fireplace is a natural focal point, so don’t hide it behind furniture or clutter, even if it is not functional.

Instead, highlight it with complementary decor like a mirror or artwork above it.

It will surely add warmth and character to the space.

10. Artwork Should Not Be Small or Hung Too High

Tiny art pieces or ones hung too high on the wall can feel disconnected from the room and can make your walls look awkward.

Go big and bold, or group smaller pieces together to create a gallery wall.

And remember, eye level is the sweet spot for hanging art since it makes the whole space look more intentional.
