2024 is the year of experimenting with various design styles, interior and fashion-wise, for one simple reason: it’s all about what an individual wants.
We’re so beyond the uniformity of the last decade, so when you search for 2024 interiors it comes up with everything from mid-century modern, farmhouse style, and even vintage maximalism.
Still strongly affected and living in the aftermaths of the pandemic and the months-long quarantine, we’ve learned to look within ourselves for inspiration.
Hence, current interior design trends are all about expressing our unique tastes and creativity. At the same time, designing our homes nowadays is a chance to express our attitudes towards the ecological state of the earth.
So What Are the Main Interior Design Trends of 2024?
Let’s go through some of the most influential design trends for the current year. I’ve found 40 that best represent what modern homeowners are all about.
Why should you care? Well, because most of them are here to stay!
1. Quiet Luxury
Quiet luxury, as the name suggests, is subtle and tasteful.
To achieve this style in your own interior, avoid over-the-top luxury items, such as bold designs and too much bling.
Instead, an occasional collectible, an antique statue, and high-quality materials are the way to go.
2. Artisan Accents
In 2024 we support all things genuine, from small businesses to handcrafted pieces of art.
Rather than the mid-century and contemporary modern interior that looks more like a carefully styled showroom rather than someone’s home, we’ve turned to homey warmth.
Along with that, we seek objects that tell a story. Handcrafted goods, no matter how simple, seem to be more welcome in a 2024 interior than an intricate mass-produced piece of decor.
3. Marble, Marble, Marble
From bathroom to kitchen, marble is welcome in any corner of a modern 2024 home.
We can tie this beautiful stone to the quiet luxury trend, as that’s exactly the kind of atmosphere it creates within an interior.
At the same time, we’re so done with PVC everything and are happy to welcome natural materials into our homes.
4. Being Sustainable
Natural materials and hand-crafted goods aren’t the only way to sustainable interior design.
We’re also actively trying to support the underconsumption movement, and that’s where the thrifting and flea-market trend comes in.
5. Gold Accents
Though in the last decade, interior designers seemed to have been avoiding gold at all costs, the precious metal is back big time!
We may encounter it in lighting, decor, and even furniture itself. As we’ve turned towards vintage inspiration, we’re more ready to accentuate the best parts of our interiors with gold.
6. Silver Accents
Silver accents and decor have always been popular. The only thing that’s ever changed is how we style them.
For instance, in 2024, much like gold, silver is utilized in elegant, classic, and vintage interiors above all.
However, in the past decades, it was mainly used to support ultra-minimalistic design tendencies.
7. Mix Your Metals
For a luxury appeal that’s anything but quiet, you could mix and match your metals.
There’s but one guiding rule: the purpose of the items. What does that mean?
It means that your wall hangings, if you have more than one, should all be either gold or silver. Same with the lighting, and the same with figurines.
8. Welcome Nature Inside
Indoor trees are all the rage at the moment.
Introduce natural greenery into your space in a way that blurs the line between the indoors and outdoors.
Two or three indoor trees should suffice, and when you pair them with plenty of natural light, you’ve got a modern greenhouse on your hands.
9. Being a Biophilic
The biophilic interior design trend is yet another product of the 2020 lockdown, which rapidly forced us to come to terms with just how much we crave to be in nature.
Indoor forests, various climber flowers, and weeds are welcome inside more than ever before.
10. Textured Walls Are Back Big Time…
Smooth shiny walls can still be seen in many modern-day interiors, though slowly but surely, the classic textured wall is here to retake its rightful place.
Yet again, on the quest for homey comfort, we turn to the warmer, more traditional type of design.
11. …As Are Textured Floors
Textured tiles and various other types of dynamic floors are expanding far beyond the bathroom.
12. Collectibles
Most of us nowadays have a little quirk where we all need to stand out and be unique in some way.
And though in some spheres of life, we made a full circle back to uniformity that way, where interior design is concerned, it works!
Collectibles are often one-of-a-kind or rarely available things, which is why they’re among the most elegant and easy ways to achieve true uniqueness in our space.
13. Vintage Furniture
While vintage accents have been present in modern interiors for a while, 2024 invites us to indulge in all things vintage as much as we can afford!
Opt for darker carpentry, seek restored furniture, or even have your heirloom restored to grace your space with even more personality.
14. Keep the Lights Vintage Too
Though some gorgeous and over-the-top chandeliers are all the rage right now, if you’d like to tone it down a little bit and yet have a wonderful ceiling light, you can’t go wrong with vintage.
15. Going Retro? Go 90s!
As ridiculous as it sounds to a 90s kid, Y2K is also considered retro nowadays.
In the past half a decade, we’ve been so in love with all things 80s, though we all know how cyclical these trends are.
In the year 2024, it’s the 90s’ turn to shine, and they shine the brightest at the mid-point between the less-is-more aesthetic and the colorful exuberance we may remember from past decades.
For instance, think of Monica’s apartment in the Friends show!
16. Prioritizing Comfort
2024 is so done with hard cashmere sofas as gorgeous as they may be.
In this year, we’re set on achieving a true ideal – style, and comfort.
Hence, the rise in squishy, soft sectionals and sofas speaks of our unwillingness to sacrifice style for substance and vice versa.
17. Curved Furniture Isn’t Going Anywhere
Though some sources may be claiming that we’ve let go of rounded furniture – especially sofas – others are adamant that it’s here to stay.
It continues to impress in the outdoor living areas as well as in living rooms.
18. Mix Your Silhouettes
Combine linear and rounded silhouettes in your interior to make it appear more dynamic.
19. Enduring Love for Maximalism
A lot of us aren’t ready to give up on maximalism – me included – and thankfully it stays with us in 2024.
The sheer diversity of this interior design style keeps the younger generation of homeowners hooked on it.
Maximalism can be vintage, rustic, or classic. Either way, it speaks volumes of the cozy exuberance that makes a house a home.
20. Natural Lighting
Large windows are a dream come true for many interior designers because an indoor space can only benefit from natural light.
Settle for getting breezy curtains or none at all to maximize the amount of sunlight your space gets.
21. For Added Shine Choose Chrome Accents
Spice up your space with some futuristic gloss that chrome accents provide.
22. Rugs Are Still Popular
Loads have been said about the usefulness of rugs in interiors, and for a reason.
They add warmth and dimension to any space, they can be found in a billion different styles and more often than not, they end up being the finishing touch in a living space.
23. Be Bold With Your Choice of Color
Bold colors aren’t going anywhere. What started as a single-color accent in the shape of a green sofa has evolved into real color bravery.
Make your space vibrant and joyful with popping colors all over.
24. Alternative Materials – Like Cork
Going back to sustainability, we’re all about consuming less of materials that are already growing scarce.
That’s why in 2024 we are turning to more sustainable and alternative solutions, such as cork!
25. Minimalism Is Still Here
2024, trend-wise, is marked by its duality.
You’re free to follow the minimalist ideal if that’s what you prefer for your interior.
However, even without that duality, minimalism is an enduring trend that’s been very popular for a very long time to just be so easily let go.
26. Dark Wood Panels
We’ve been rushing to replace our grandma’s old, stuffy cabinets with bright and beige shades for quite a while now, and in that process, some of us forgot how wonderfully elegant dark wood shades can be.
When paired with modern silhouettes, it makes for an elegant and modern space that exudes effortless luxury.
27. Staying Safe: Stick to a Neutral Palette
Is beige your comfort zone? Go for it, that’s what a home is supposed to be!
As a matter of fact, it’s the comfort zone for many other people which is why the beige trend follows us throughout 2024.
28. Speaking of Neutral…
When it comes to the neutrals, the black and white palette was and is a banger.
It’s a timeless classic that’s probably still going to be with us for a long time.
29. Integrated Tech Makes All the Difference
A good chunk of our interior is taken by the tech we’ve come to use daily.
As our tech and taste develop more and more, integrating tech into your walls and furniture is slowly but surely becoming the mainstream.
Whether we’re talking about a built-in oven and microwave or a TV and fireplace, the integrated option allows us to preserve the balance and elegance of our interiors.
30. Japandi Continues to Impress
This interesting fusion has infiltrated our bedrooms, living rooms as well as public spaces such as coffee shops.
It’s here to stay for the remainder of 2024.
31. In 2024 We Pay Attention to Our Secondary Spaces
Secondary spaces in the home such as the entryway and hallway have long been neglected and robbed of any thoughtful styling.
2024 breaks that habit, as we’re inclined to design the secondary rooms with the same amount of detail and care as the main ones.
32. Bouclé Dominates Cozy Interiors
This fun and cozy material has been all over the place and we can’t seem to get enough of it.
It follows us into 2024, however, it’s hinted that we may start implementing it on a slightly smaller scale.
33. High Tech Over the Top Lighting, Please
We want chandeliers that dominate the room, simply put.
2024 is all about these high-tech, intricate, and unique lighting solutions.
34. We Love Victorian Accents
Do you want decor with a backstory? How about going beyond vintage and into the Victorian era?
Grace your classic modern interior with brass candle holders and other Victorian-style accents to add additional depth into the space.
35. Monochrome Designs Endure
Much like minimalism, the monochrome trend endures and stays with us in 2024.
36. Striped Walls Are It
Bold stripes are back and they’re everywhere!
As we keep welcoming boldness in 2024, stripes fit right in there. Create a chic and unusual space for yourself that’s gonna make your guests’ jaws drop.
37. Get a China Cabinet for the Classic Look
Create a cozy ambiance just like at grandma’s with the help of a classic china cabinet to show off your favorite trinkets.
38. Local Materials & Inclinations
When in Rome do as Romans do, as the saying goes.
In 2024 we like to pay homage to all the various cultures around the world, but before going exotic think about your local traditions and trends when it comes to home design.
Using local materials, patterns, and decor can make your home feel much more authentic.
39. Remember Glass Bricks? They’re Back!
Honestly, I’ve forgotten all about the glass bricks, although they used to be everywhere!
2024 is the year we bring them back new and improved. We’re going to use them as space borders and decor, though before they used to be implemented mainly on the outside.
40. Butter Yellow Everything
Yellow has been quite popular for a while, though in 2024, a particular shade plans to stick around.
Butter yellow, the softest and coziest of the yellow shades, is the one we welcome into our interiors this year.
What Awaits Us in 2025?
Check out the top 10 trend predictions for next year.
1. Integrated Outdoor Living
With the lockdown, the need for outdoor living areas took us by surprise so many of them were added on where we could fit them.
However, at the moment, there’s a growing trend of integrated outdoor cooking and living areas that aren’t only much more practical but also aesthetically pleasing than the alternative.
2. Minimalism, But Cozy
We expect to see even more of minimalist interiors in 2025, though they’ll come with a cozy twist!
3. A Twist on the Monochrome Trend
Instead of the classic monochrome, in 2025 we’re going to encounter more single-color spaces but with varying shades.
4. We’re Staying Eco-Friendly
Our ecological awareness is ever on the rise, hence in 2025 we’ll continue to fight the good fight, insist on natural materials, and battle overconsumption.
5. Natural Stone Accents
Also, we’ll keep on introducing natural stone into our interiors, be it in architecture or decor.
6. Home SPA Vibes
The popularity of the japandi interior design style slowly but surely takes us towards embracing the SPA ambiance in our homes.
7. Discreet Home Tech
The integrated tech trend stays, though we’ll keep trying to make the tech blend into the rest of the interior as much as possible.
8. Textured Ceilings
Plain white ceilings are on their way out.
9. Maximalism Stays
We didn’t get tired of maximalism in 2024, and we won’t in 2025 either. How long will it stay?
10. Supporting Genuine Handcrafts
Next year, we’ll continue to support handcrafted goods and cultivate artisan style in our homes.
