Unconventional London Getaway: The 1960s Water Tower Experience

Unconventional London Getaway: The 1960s Water Tower Experience

Originally designed by Edmund Percey of Scherrer and Hicks Architects, the Tonwell Tower was built to supply water to the surrounding villages.

It was active from the year 1964 to the early 2000s.

The tower used to maintain up to 50,000 gallons of water, even though it may not appear as enormous in the picture.

It’s a 23m (75’) tall brutalist construction, which upon restoration contains enough space to comfortably receive eight guests.

1. Picturesque Country An Hour Away From London

The village that the tower is located in and named after belongs to the county of Hertfordshire.

While staying in the Tonwell Tower, the guests have a picturesque view of England’s woods and meadows.

And should you decide to visit the capital, it’s only an hour’s ride away!

2. What’s There To Do?

Tonwell, the surrounding villages, and the county itself have so much to offer.

Visit local pubs, take a hike, and see lakes, waterfalls, gardens, woodlands, and ruins. The Harry Potter Studios is a must-visit, too!

You may need to book a week-long stay just to experience half of it! Not to mention, there are plenty of old English houses to marvel at all over the town.

3. The Accommodation

The superhosts Alison and Matthew, who’s an industrial designer, redesigned the Tonwell Tower for absolute comfort.

The interior is warm and modern, with a bunch of available modern amenities.

The tower is spacious, allowing for a lot of traffic space. It makes for a comfortable stay, and the hosts note that the tower is a great space for working remotely.

There’s stable wifi, the surroundings are serene and the whole property around the tower is exclusively private to the guests.

The tower is also pet-friendly and includes free parking.

4. Living Quarters

The living room is designed in an organic modern style. It’s comfortable and spacious, with a clear favor for modern shapes and warm, natural materials.

There’s an Apple TV, sound system, books, and even a game console to ensure you’re never bored.

The floor where the living quarters are located functions as an open-plan unit, with the kitchen and dining room in the same space.

5. Kitchen & Dining

The kitchen is equally as modern, with all the necessities available. There’s a coffee maker and a blender, a toaster, a microwave, a dishwasher, and everything else you may need.

The kitchen is equipped to make sure the guests can prepare a variety of meals, allowing them to feel completely at home.

6. Bedrooms

There are four bedrooms, some with the Queen bed, others with the King.

Though they’re also comfortable, they are quite compact. Like the rest of the home, the bedrooms are designed to promote warmth and modern comfort.

Each one offers a view of the surrounding landscape.

7. Bathrooms

There are four en suite bathrooms, which grants a whole another level of comfort to the tower’s guests.

They’re modern and comfortable, each including the usual bathroom amenities.

You may also use the washer and dryer free of charge during the stay.

8. Accessibility

Accessibility may be an issue for some guests, and the hosts note as much.

Because of the original construction, the premises are reached exclusively by the round stairway.

This limits the size of the luggage you’re able to bring upstairs. For now, there’s no lift, and there’s very little room for a wheelchair.

The hosts are still trying to work on that.
