The town of Maarssen, Netherlands is one of those magical places where time seems to have stopped long ago.
Like a place from a traditional Grimm fairytale, it abounds in lovely old houses huddled about the river Vecht that’s running through.
Along the river, you may also see teahouses which date back to the 17th century.
One such teahouse is available to tourists and can be booked on Airbnb.
1. What’s With All the Teahouses?
I also wondered why the teahouses were so important that there were so many of them preserved in this town.
And the reason is funnier than you could have guessed – in the 17th century, being able to afford tea was a flex.
So the fortunate people who could afford the leisure of a tea party built beautiful teahouses to rub it in everyone’s faces.
2. The Romantic Exterior
The vast majority of these houses share the classic design finished with the Greco-Roman architectural accents.
They’re gorgeous and dreamy, as they should be since they were designed for leisure.
The particular teahouse we’re talking about here is actually a tad larger than most which is why it’s suitable for living.
The superhosts, couple Ewoud and Catelijne note that even longer accommodation is possible as the house has all the amenities a guest may need.
3. The View From the House
The teahouse offers a view of the river Vecht, the promenade, and the town of Maarssen.
The guest may see and hear the many boats on the river, and even the teahouse in question contains a basement designed for mooring a boat.
4. A Car Ride Away From Amsterdam
Maarssen is located 32 kilometers from the Dutch capital, Amsterdam.
It’s a short car or train ride away. Oh, and while we’re on the topic of cars, the accommodation includes free street parking.
5. The Accommodation
As previously mentioned, the teahouse was built slightly bigger, so it contains a living and dining room, a small kitchen, a bathroom, and two bedrooms.
It’s fit to accommodate up to four people and is family-friendly.
It’s even got special amenities for children such as books and toys, though the hosts kindly note that the proximity of the river may be dangerous for those who can’t swim.
6. The Dining Room
The inside of the teahouse is generally ordinary and breezy.
There are a few leather and wood pieces that give the interior a touch of traditional design.
7. The Bedrooms
There are two bedrooms, both of which are designed in a bright and unimposing way.
One contains the Queen bed and the other the King, making the teahouse welcoming to families, couples, and singles alike.
8. The Bathroom
The bathroom is bright and sunlit and contains pastel accents here and there.
At the center is the old clawfoot tub that serves as a reminder of how old the place actually is.
From November to March, you may also request a Jacuzzi for an additional fee.
9. The Kitchen
The kitchen is quite elegant, containing white cabinets and a marble surface.
It’s equipped with everything a guest may need for a comfortable stay.
10. The Living Room
The living room is cozy and spacious. The whole place abounds in sunlight and wooden accents, which gives it a familiar warmth.
There are two couches and an armchair, ensuring a lot of comfort. There’s also indoor entertainment available, such as TV, books, and board games.
